TAKE IT FROM AUDREY: LOVE ADVICE

February 8, 2015

Valentine's Day is probably my least favorite holiday.  Besides the chocolate and candy everywhere, there aren't many things to look forward to.  First of all, my dad's birthday happens to be the 14th as well, so that's always taken the top priority.  Second of all, I dislike being around a ton of lovey dovey couples as much as the next person (sorry!).  It just feels...disconcerting.

However, I still love hearing about...love!  The timeless love stories and marriages that have lasted for fifty years--now that's love.  I may not be a love expert, but I happen to know a lovely lady who is: Audrey Hepburn, of course!

Everyone can learn a thing or two from Audrey about loving and liking and crushing.  It's almost impossible to name a romantic situation she (or, at least, one of her roles) hasn't been in.

1. Hold your own, and have high standards.

As Eliza Doolittle furiously explains to Professor Higgins, don't care for anyone who doesn't care for you. Always love the one you can count on, and the one who has your back.  They may not be whom society would have you love, but you love them, and that's all that matters.  That being said, the person you believe you'll end up with may not be your guaranteed choice in the end...

2. Whatever you've been through, you are always capable of loving again.

Life is tough, and life is unfair.  Some people are more aware of this than others.  It's much easier to give in to the grind, and turn your back on all things happy.  The easy way is almost never the right way, and eventually everyone has to face the world again.  Love is waiting for you, but you have to cross the threshold first...

3. Look beyond convention, and find real beauty.

Not going to lie, everyone has dreamed of finding that perfect someone (who is extremely gorgeous and happens to be a movie star in his spare time).  Having those kinds of unrealistic standards is not only setting yourself up for failure, but also preventing you from seeing the perfect someone right in front of you.  Be able to look past the stereotypes and the outward appearances, because true love is always buried somewhere deep within.

4. Not all crushes will be loves, and not all loves started out as crushes.

Picture this:  a girl has had an undeniable crush on the son of her employer since her childhood.  When she becomes older, this man begins to return her feelings, and she is ecstatic.  However, she also meets another man that begins to fall in love with her, one she had never considered.  This man might be the better match for her.  Which one does she pick?  In other words, not all crushes last, and not all lovers started out as high school sweethearts.

5. Some love may not last, but the memories it brings will never fade.

The sad truth about love is that, nine times out of ten, it doesn't last.  That doesn't mean you shouldn't pursue love.  Just because life doesn't last forever, doesn't mean that you should choose not to live, right? If the love was real, the memories you associate with it will never fade, even until the end of your days.  This is true for more than just romantic love.  It is impossible to truly forget anyone that you ever loved.

I hope this semi-sappy post can give you some helpful advice.  You may not think I'm qualified to give this sort of advice, but Audrey certainly is!

Love (x3),
Tori
